No fewer than 13 individuals lose their lives and ninety-eight injured in rail accident in Mexico.
A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel censure from critics regarding the pace and handling of the country's flagship public works projects.
The disaster happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a line constructed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.
“We will rigorously clarify the reasons behind this incident,” stated the head of state.
The president reported that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The president stated plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those involved.
Major Initiative of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the immediate past president, whose term ended the year before. This venture was intimately linked to his leadership's economic agenda for the southeastern region.
Another massive railway undertaking from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economic fortunes of a comparatively poorer part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions
The building of both train projects was overseen by the armed forces, marking a significant expansion of its role in national infrastructure. They were built at an rapid speed, surpassing forecasts to be partially inaugurated before the end of that presidency.
However, this accelerated timeline had also raised significant apprehensions over safety standards.
- Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This includes an previous collision this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had several non-lethal derailments.
Calls for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the head of a key rival party demanded an immediate halt in the development and management of all similar projects.
This halt was suggested pending a comprehensive independent investigation. The party stated that the loss of life "calls for prompt explanations."
In reaction, the national leader insisted that the train had been operating in total accordance with all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the development and operation of these vital projects.
